The SCPR has learned from a Republican source that Christian Hagan (daughter of Marlboro Township trustee John Hagan; also former state representative of the 50th House District - 2000 to 2008) is the choice to succeed Todd Snitchler in the 50th.
The source was aghast at her choice, referring to her as being inexperienced (on a number of different levels) personified.
Undoubtedly, Snitchler will put the best face on the selection. However, he has to be disappointed that his choice - Rick Guiley - Louisville city councilman did not get the nod. Apparently, though he favored Guiley, he was true to his word that he would not actively participate in pushing for any one candidate over another. If so, then Guiley was at a disadvantage in trying to secure the appointment.
Hagan challenged Snitchler in the Republican primary in 2008. It was a bitter contest that included the filing of ethics complaints by each of the candidates.
One would have thought that Hagan's lashing out at Snitchler's Columbus-based supporters would have been a barrier to obtaining the appointment to replace Snitchler.
Her presentation at the Stark County Executive Committee selection (non-binding) meeting was focused on being young and being female. The Report doubts that those criteria were key. More likely is that her father held the post of eight years and the Columbus selectors believes that the name Hagan will continue to resonate with 50th District voters.
A leading Stark County Republican tells The Report that Richard Regula supporters are upset with the Hagan selection and are urging him to take her on in next year's Republican primary.
