DISCUSSION: TODAY AT CANTON CITY HALL - HEALY TRIES TO FIRE POLICE CHIEF MCKIMM?

The STARK COUNTY POLITICAL REPORT (The Report) has learned that the beleaguered and besieged Mayor William J. Healy, II of Canton tried to fire Canton Chief of Police Dean L. McKimm today.

Canton Law Director Joseph Martuccio stepped in and stopped the firing.

It appears that Mayor Healy is coming unglued.

The Repository today reported that the mayor issued a directive to city workers not to talk to recently fired service director and chief of staff Tom Bernabei. Why would he need to do that. Probably because Healy put Bernabei in a position in which city workers saw Bernabei functioning as the mayor.

Further evidence that the mayor may not see himself as being in control.

The Report also has an observation of a city hall observer that Safety Director Tom Nesbitt may not last the week.

What news will be coming out of city hall tomorrow?

Unglued? He's melted down. I don't know what to make of this. I'm familiar with Canton's political scandals going back to the turn of the century, but this is a whole different animal--so far, at least.

Any news on why Healy ordered all media inquiries on local crime to go to his office instead of police?

Does this have anything to do with Safety Director Nesbitt's ordering Chief McKimm not to talk to the press, but to refer all media to his office?

HEALY NEEDS TO COME CLEAN AND RESIGN TODAY! DON'T MAKE IT WORSE ON YOURSELF. YOU ARE SMART, BUT THIS JOB IS WAY OUT OF YOUR ABILITIES. PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF CANTON...... RESIGN AND DO IT TODAY

Whats up with the Rep? Removing all comments on Healy stories. I guess citizens of Stark County should stop reading it and encourage the Akron Beacon to do a Stark Co. Edition. Let the Rep go out of business. If this was a republican, they would be all over it and with hourly updates.

Censorship of comments to protect from libel and slander issues is not unexpected and actually the responsible thing to do in this climate.
REMOVAL of comments from any blog or commentary online community is virtually unprecedented in the history of the press. You may expect this type of action in an amateur setting, but never from a professional media site.
This is indicative of a culture that somehow feels compelled to restrict free speech. Certainly they could delay, review and remove those posts that do not meet their standards without removing COMMENTS IN THEIR ENTIRETY.

Does anyone see a "recall" petition ciculating in the near future?

Why hasn't the Rep reported on this story (the mayor trying to fire the chief) surely that is newsworthy! And why did they suddenly cut off the comments on all these stories? I have seen terrible comments about public officials and public employees, especially law enforcement officers, and the Rep has always let them stand.

Thanks for keeping us informed, Martin. I have no idea what is going on in the Mayor's office, but, like everyone else, I sure would like to know. A local individual who has an axe to grind with me and my mother, (Mary Cirelli), is currently spreading false rumors that we are commentating in online venues about this situation under assumed names. I have put her on notice that I will sue her for libel if she makes any slanderous comments about me on the internet. If I have any comment to make about Mayor Healy I will only do so under my real name. So far, I have no comment to make about it because I know nothing about the situation, other than what I have read in the paper and online. I will wait for the proper authorities to investigate the goings-on at City Hall before passing judgment on anyone. That seems the prudent thing to do at this time.

Healy and Mark Dann should be horsewhipped (fuguratively speaking). Both took advantage of anti-R sentiment to take jobs from women who were better suited for the jobs intellectually and tempermentally. And neither Dann nor Healy had what it takes to do the job (but what does that matter). As to Healy, I guarantee you that shutting down all discourse and firing any and all dissenters was not a "Bush-Taft-Creighton" policy that Healy campainged against.

LOL, did you see Jeff G's (Ex Editor of the Rep) VERY lame excuses in regard to the removal of ALL Healy comments?

There only update was to announce the replacement Chief of Staff .... and the comments are blocked there as well.

This is a story in and of itself. Do you think WKYC, or any of the tv stations that are reporting on this, are aware that the Rep not only refuses to report on this investigation, but also refuses to allow comments on the same?

about WKYC, there are some comments on their website under the story from a couple people saying our local paper has not even covered it.
